Ian Cox BVSc BSc GPCertSAM CertSAM MRCVS

After qualifying from Bristol Vet School in 1999, Ian moved to Jersey to start his veterinary career. After working at New Era as a locum for 3 months, he joined the team full-time, and has worked here ever since.

Ian strongly believes that New Era offers the best level of care in the Channel Islands, and aims to provide referral level care without pets having to leave the Island. He has therefore obtained post graduate qualifications from the European Society of Practicing Veterinary Surgeons and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in small animal medicine, increasing the range of services we can offer locally. Ian is also responsible for the visits of the mobile MRI scanner and enjoys soft tissue surgery, and working with reptiles, birds and other exotics.

In his spare time, Ian enjoys keeping fit and all sorts of water sports. He is a very keen runner and a member of the local Hash Harriers. When weather permits (and sometimes when it doesn’t!), Ian can often be found exploring the island’s coastline in a kayak. Ian and his wife have a son (Jacob), a daughter (Lydia), 2 cats, and a very bouncy German Pointer, called Theo.

He is a very experienced farm animal and small animal vet, conducting most of his small animal consultations from our Leodis branch surgery.

John’s great interest is complimentary medicine, in particular acupuncture. He has studied this ancient Chinese treatment and specifically its use in animals for many years, consolidating his learning with an intensive series of courses held by the Association for British Veterinary Acupuncturists, of which he is a member. Whilst John mainly uses acupuncture on dogs and cats, there are also many applications for its use in horses.

Lianna McKirdy DVM MRCVS

Lianna recently moved to Jersey from Canada, where she was working in a 24 hour veterinary hospital. Her main interest lies in equine medicine, but she also enjoys working with farm animals, small animals, and wildlife.

Lianna grew up on a horse farm outside of Ottawa, where she was very active in the training and showing of hunter, jumper, and eventing horses. She sadly had to sell her horse before moving to Jersey, but has recently taken on a retired racehorse Mr Opulence.

Outside of the clinic, Lianna enjoys hiking, traveling, staying active outdoors, and spending time with her husband, 2 dogs, and her cat

Maja Platiša DVM MRCVS

Maja joined New Era in early March 2017. She came over from Guernsey where she was working for last 18 months in a mainly small animal practice. She enjoys all aspects of small animal work but is also very keen to do farm animal and equine work.

She qualified in Croatia in summer 2015. Her family there has a Salers beef farm and this is where her passion towards cattle comes from. She has been traveling around the UK and Ireland seeing practice as a student before settling in Guernsey. Now she is enthusiastic to be working with us, finally as a mixed animal vet, which was her initial desire. Her main interests are small animal medicine and surgery and bovine reproduction.

Maja is also interested in charity veterinary work and spent 10 days in Greece doing stray cat neuterings to help control population problem. In spare time she enjoys long walks with her German shepherd cross, swimming, playing volleyball, football and reading.

Max qualified from the University of Glasgow and has a keen interest in equine veterinary medicine, particularly orthopaedics. Before vet school, she had previously gained a BSc (Hons) in Equine Science and completed a Masters by Research in a type of equine lameness; she was particularly pleased when her undergraduate dissertation on equine behaviour was published by the British Society of Animal Science in 2006. Her work within the veterinary industry has taken her from Edinburgh, to Wales, to The Gambia and then finally to Glasgow to study veterinary medicine and she is excited to make the move to Jersey for the next step in her career.

When she’s not working Max enjoys riding, travelling, and baking; she is very much looking forward to learning to dive while on the island.
